The NORTANA Travel Grant
To be eligible for the NORTANA Travel Grant, the applicant must be a member of NORTANA – the Norwegian Researchers and Teachers Association of North America. The organization consists of teachers who teach Norwegian or Norwegian culture at colleges and universities in North America or graduate students studying the same subjects in the United States. Graduate students applying for the grant must have passed their preliminary exams before they apply. The grant is awarded by the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the recipients must study or do research in Norway and be a US citizen. The grants range from $750 to $1,500. For more information, please contact the Royal Norwegian Consulate General in New York. The application form is sent to the NORTANA mailing list approximately a month before the deadline. Applications are normally due in February or March.

Alf og Bergljot Kolflats Stipendfond
The stipend was established in 1976 by Alf and Bergljot Kolflat in Wilmette, Illinois.
This award is given to a Norwegian engineer or architect who wants to take a trip to the United States to get practical experience within his field of interest. The applicant must have worked for at least three years after graduation, and he or she must present a detailed plan for the trip when they apply. Also, a budget for the trip must be included as well as references.

The American-Scandinavian Foundation Award for Study in Scandinavia
The American-Scandinavian Foundation gives out this award of either $20,000 or $4,000 for a period up to one year. The student must be a US citizen, and he must study in one of the Scandinavian countries for up to one year. The student must be doing work on the graduate level or do research in all fields. The applicants must have finished their undergraduate degrees prior to applying for this award, and the American-Scandinavian Foundation prefers to give the awards to people who speak a little Norwegian, Danish or Swedish. The application deadline is November 1, and the American-Scandinavian Foundation does not state how many awards they give out every year. The American-Scandinavian Foundation Scholarships
The American-Scandinavian Foundation offers several different scholarships and grants for Scandinavians wishing to study at a university in the United States. These grants are for postgraduate work, and they can be in all fields. The only requirement is that the student must study in the United States and be 21 years or older. The grants amount from $3,000 to $18,000, and they are awarded for one year. There are several different awards, meaning that there are also various requirements for each award. Therefore, it is important for the applicant to visit the websites for the American-Scandinavian Foundation and the Norway-America Association for information about the application guidelines for the respective awards.

The American-Scandinavian Foundation – Visiting Lectureship
The American-Scandinavian Foundation will give $20,000 plus $5,000 to a Norwegian or Swedish scholar or expert who goes to the United States for up to six months. The academic must teach one course at an American institution on public policy, conflict reslution, environmental studies, healthcare or multiculturalism. The scholar must also participate at a NORTANA conference, which is the annual conference for the Norwegian Researchers and Teachers Association of North America. Another conference which he must participate at is the SASS conference, the Society for the Advancement of Scandinavian Studies’ annual meeting in North America. He or she must also participate at the Swedish Teachers’ Conference. The Belldegruns Human Rights Stipend
This stipend was founded by the Intertech Corporation and the Thanks to Scandinavia Foundation. The award is to be used at Columbia University in New York, and it is given to an applicant from one of the Nordic countries. The applicant must be working for human rights, and this stipend enables him to go to New York and attend Columbia University for four months where he will attend four classes on human rights issues at the Center for the Study of Human Rights (CSHR). One of the areas of interest must be how modern technology and the internet may be used in order to promote these issues all over the world. Furthermore, the recipient must use his experiences from Columbia University in his future career related to human rights issues. The applicant must have finished his bachelor’s degree prior to applying as well as worked with human rights issues. Also, the applicant cannot live in the United States when he applies.

The Brittingham Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship is for Norwegian students wishing to study in the US at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The Brittingham Memorial Scholarship offers a full academic year’s studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison for two Nordic students. The scholarship rotates so that each Nordic country sends one student every second year. The scholarship includes transatlantic air fares, tuition fees, books, room and board, and, to a limited extent, out-of-pocket expenses and travel expenses for travels within the U.S. to visit members of the BVO. Also included is the fee for participating in the BVO Annual Convention at the end of the studies. Scholars are expected to stay in the Viking House in Madison.
Who may apply: Any Nordic citizen between 21 and 27 who is studying at a university or similar institution, with a minimum of one year of study behind her/him at the time of going to the U.S.A.

The Fulbright Stipend
The Fulbright Stipend is awarded by the Fulbright Program and the US government, and it was founded in 1946 by Senator J. William Fulbright from Arkansas. There have been 275,000 recipients so far, more than half of which have come from countries outside the United States. There are approximately 6000 stipends given out every year, and the total amount of money given in the stipend varies, while the total length of the study period can be from three months and up to one year. All nationalities may apply for this stipend, and the levels eligible are graduate, postgraduate and postdoctorate as well as teachers and administrators. The students must attend a university in the United States, but they may choose whatever subject they want on which to focus. The John Dana Archbold Fellowship Program - USA
The Archbold Fellowship Program was established in 1979, and it is administered by the Nansen Fund, Inc. in Houston, Texas. The Norway-America Association is collaborating with the Nansen Fund in the administration of the fund. The fellowship is awarded by The Archbold Fellowship Program and the award can amount to up to $5,000. The applicant must be a US citizen doing research or work at the postdoctorate or postgraduate level. The applicant may also be working with professional development. The fellowship is designed to let the student go to Norway to study at the University in Oslo. However, American students must attend language classes in Norway prior to the start of the academic year, and they are only allowed to apply during even-numbered years (2006, 2008 etc). This fellowship is administered under the Norway-America Association, and therefore, one may find more information on the topic on their website. The Norway-America Association Awards
The Norway-America Association offers several different graduate scholarships for Norwegian citizens wishing to study in the United States on the graduate level. They must have completed their bachelor’s degree by spring 2006 before applying for these scholarships. Norwegians who reside in Norway and plan to return to Norway after graduation are given preference in the selection process, and they cannot have studied for four or more years in the United States. There is also a restriction when it comes to receiving financial help from other sources, i.e. applicants who receive financial support from other scholarships and fellowships may be rejected. The applicants must also be members of the Norway-America Association, and the membership fee is 200 NOK per year. There is also an administrative fee of 250 NOK, which must be paid to bank account number 7878.05.23025. The applicants are evaluated on their academic record as well as their future goals, and they must be accepted by an American institution prior to the start of their studies. The organizations offering these awards have several different requirements when it comes to area of study, university etc, so please contact the American-Scandinavian Foundation or the Norway-America Association directly in order to find the appropriate scholarship.

The Norway-America Association Graduate & Research Stipend
The Norway-America Association Graduate & Research Stipend is awarded by the Norway-America Association to Norwegian graduate students who wish to study in the United States. The awards range from $2,000 to $25,000 and aim to give the student substantial financial support for one year of studies in the United States. The student may study all kinds of topics on the graduate level or do research. There are several different requirements to the applicants, however. The applicant must be a member of the Norway-America Association, and he or she must pay 250 NOK in administrative fees. Also, the Norway-America Association is particularly looking for students who are currently living in Norway, and who intend to return to Norway after their graduation. The Norwegian Emigration Fund of 1975
This scholarship is awarded by the Norse Federation to American students studying Norwegian emigration history or the relations between the United States and Norway on the doctorate, professional or graduate level. It was established in 1975 by the Norwegian Parliament in Oslo when Norway was celebrating the 150th anniversary of organized Norwegian emigration to the United States.
The fund started up with one million Norwegian kroner, and it has been a popular scholarship for American students over the last thirty years. The fund can also give awards to institutions in the United States that study these subjects. The award ranges from 5000 NOK to 20000 NOK per grant, and the total amount is 60000 NOK. The student has to study in Norway, but he or she must be a US citizen or US resident. The application deadline is February 1, and you can get more information about the award by sending an e-mail to the Norse Federation at norseman@online.no. The Norwegian Marshall Fund
The Norwegian Marshall Fund was established in 1977 as a symbol of the Marshall Aid that Norway received in the aftermath of World War II. The fund was established with money from Norwegian individuals and corporations as an expression of gratitude after the financial support from the United States to Norway in the aftermath of World War II. The founders wanted to convey the importance of the Marshall Aid through this scholarship program.
The grant from the Norwegian Marshall Fund is split into 5-15 awards of up to $5,000 every year. The grants vary from $1,500 to $4,500 or 10000 NOK to 30000 NOK. Most of the applicants are US citizens planning on studying in Norway at the postgraduate level or doing research in science or the humanities related to Norway and the USA. The applicant must study in Norway. There are exceptions, however, and Norwegians may apply for this grant if they want to travel to the United States to study. Other requirements are that the applicant must be connected to a Norwegian sponsor or a research institution prior to applying. The Norwegian Thanksgiving Fund Scholarship
The Norwegian Thanksgiving Fund Scholarship is given to eligible students by former Norwegian students and their friends. Only one award is handed out each year, and it can be worth up to $3,000.The applicant must be a US citizen doing graduate level work in Norway. The student must be working on social medicine, Norwegian culture, fisheries, geology, glaciology or astronomy at a Norwegian university. The Professional Development Award
This is an award for established professionals with a higher education who want to study within their own field of interest. The applicant must have worked for at least three years after finishing his or her education as well as planning on doing special research or further study in their fields. Two awards are given out every year, but one cannot apply for this award; one must be invited to apply.

The Thomas E. and Margaret C. Brittingham Memorial Scholarship
The Thomas E. and Margaret C. Brittingham Memorial Scholarship is given to two Scandinavian graduate students per year. The graduate students are picked after a thorough process, and they may then attend the University of Wisconsin for one academic year. The scholarship covers the entire tuition, making it worth about $30,000. The recipients are also taken care of by the Brittingham Viking Organization in Wisconsin, and they are initiated as members of the organization at the end of their stay in the United States. The Torskeklubben Stipend
“Torskeklubben” was established in Minnesota in 1933 as a Minneapolis-based club for American men of Norwegian descent who shared an interest in Norway and Norwegian-American relations. For the last sixty years the club has been dedicated to promote Norwegian-American relations through helping Norwegians come to the United States to study. The applicant must already be accepted at the Graduate School at the University of Minnesota before applying for the award. The large stipend covers the tuition, but the applicant will also receive $7,500 from the club for one year at the school.
