American cultural theorist awarded the Holberg Prize

Minister of Research and Higher Education Tora Aasland presented the Holberg International Memorial Prize 2008 during a ceremony held in Bergen on 26 November. The Prize was awarded to American professor Fredric R. Jameson

The Holberg Prize, which is worth NOK 4.6 million (equivalent to USD 648 000, or EUR 504 000), is awarded for outstanding scholarly work in the fields of the arts and humanities, social sciences, law and theology.

Fredric R. Jameson (born in 1934) is a key figure in cultural theory, and he is awarded the prize for his “understanding of the relation between social formations and cultural forms”.

At the Prize award ceremony, Fredric R. Jameson said how pleased he was that the Holberg Prize recognised the important area of cultural theory, which few have heard of outside academia, but where important scholarly research is being done.

The Board of the Ludvig Holberg Memorial Fund also awards the Nils Klim Prize for young Nordic researchers under 35. The Nils Klim Prize of NOK 250 000 (equivalent to USD 36 000 or EUR 28 000) was awarded this year to Anne Birgitta Pessi from Finland for her interdisciplinary work “at the crossroads of theology, social policy studies and sociology”.
