Johan Anders Bær at Deutsches Haus

Norwegian Sámi traditional singer (Juoigi) and scholar Johan Anders Bær, will perform at Deutsches Haus the second week of May.

In addition to being one of the finest joikers in the Sámi world, Johan Anders Bær is a full-time reindeer herder from Karasjok, Norway.  He has two joik CDs, Máhkarávju (Magerøya from 1992) and Guovssu (Daybreak from 1997), and participated in the 1994 Lillehammer Winter Olympics with Nils-Aslak Valkeapää, the father of Sami poetry. The Sámi literary scholar  Harald Gaski calls Bær one of the very finest of contemporary joikers.
The program will also feature Ørgen Karlsen, playing the didgeridoo.
The event is free of charge. All are welcome. Hosted by the Program in Finnish Studies, Department of Germanic Languages, Columbia University, and the American-Scandinavian Foundation
