For the past two years, curators at such premier Norwegian institutions as the National Gallery in Oslo, the Munch Museum, the Romsdalmuseet, the Folkmuseum and the Henie-Onstad Art Center have worked closely with counterparts in American museums. Together they have organized the exhibitions -- many featuring Norwegian works of art never before shown abroad -- that make up the centerpiece of "Norwegian Visions." Also many artists, including contemporary painters, classical and jazz musicians, actors and folk singers, will present their work for the first time to American audiences.
"Norwegian Visions" bows with a constellation of exhibitions and performances in New York and Washington, D.C. These programs coincide with a state visit by the King and Queen of Norway in early October and later in the month with the 50th anniversary of the United Nations, whose first Secretary General, Trygve Lie, was Norwegian. More "Norwegian Visions" programming is currently in development for presentation in other American cities in 1996 and beyond.
A listing of exhibitions, concerts, recitals, screenings, readings, new publications and special events follows. This schedule is for September and October; events occurring in November and December will be listed in News of Norway next month.
