More than a thousand events are planned during the year-long celebration; they include the World Championship in Nordic Skiing in February, the Norwegian Festival of Baroque Music in April, the Festival of Youth in May, the Millennium Week—in which King Harald V and Queen Sonja will join in celebrating both Trondheim’s birthday and the Queen’s 60th birthday—in June, the Saint Olav Festival in August and the Trondheim International Festival of Theater in September. Trondheim, founded by King Olav Tryggvason in 997, went on to become the political, religious and geographical center of Norway. In the Middle Ages, the city was one of four pilgrim centers of the Christian world along with Rome, Jerusalem and Santiago de Compostela. A pilgrim has been chosen as the symbol of the celebrations.
