In their citation, judges Tsipi Keller, Michael F. Moore, and Johanna Reiss said about Nunnally: "In completing her translation of The Cross, the third and final volume of Sigrid Undset’s trilogy Kristin Lavransdatter, Tiina Nunnally has returned a masterpiece of Scandinavian literature to the English bookshelf… brilliantly captur[ing] a world both remote and strangely familiar." Nunnally was a nominee for last year’s PEN/Book-of-the-Month Club Translation Prize for the second volume of Kristin Lavransdatter, subtitled The Wife. Each volume of the trilogy is published by Penguin.
The PEN/Book-of-the-Month Club Translation Prize, founded in 1963, was the first award in the United States created expressly to acknowledge the art of the literary translator. It is given annually to recognize a distinguished book-length translation from any language into English, published in the preceding calendar year. The awards will be presented on the evening of Monday, May 21, at the Walter Reade Theater at New York City’s Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts.
