Norway increases humanitarian assistance to Liberia

The Foreign Ministry decided today to allocate a further NOK 10m (USD 1.4m)to alleviate the disastrous humanitarian situation in Liberia. Norwegian humanitarian assistance to Liberia this year has now totalled NOK 45m (USD 6.2).

Norway is already the largest contributor to the UN Consolidated Inter-Agency Appeal for Liberia 2003.

"Now that the security situation in Liberia is expected to improve, and the UN has revised its Consolidated Appeal, we want to act rapidly to alleviate the humanitarian situation and thereby help to stabilise the situation in the country and the region as a whole," said Foreign Minister Jan Petersen.

Relief plane
The funds are being divided between Norwegian Church Aid, the WHO and UNICEF.

Norwegian Church Aid is sending a plane with emergency relief supplies including blankets, water supply equipment, powdered milk, emergency rations, medicines and personal hygiene kits for the 50 000 internally displaced persons who have sought refuge at reception centres in Monrovia.

The WHO has requested surgical supply kits for two public hospitals in Monrovia. UNICEF is being given a sum of money for its efforts in the country, which include support for the reintegration of child soldiers and the reuniting of children with their families.
