Double whammy for World Idol winner

The reigning World Idol took home two prizes at the Nordic Music Awards on October 21. This Christmas, the 26-year-old from Bergen performs live in the DC area. Twice.

The awards for Best Norwegian artist and Best Norwegian newcomer went to the winner of the first Norwegian Idol contest. Since that victory, Nilsen has experienced a tremendous career boost, selling around 200,000 of his debut album "I". On New Year's Day 2004, the former plumber took home the first place at the international World Idol finals.

The happy winner told the Norwegian daily newspaper VG that it was a 'major relief" to win the Nordic Music Awards.

"I was so nervous in the minutes before it was announced that I had won. Perhaps it has something to do with the fact that I'm on my way back to the limelight and has to prove a thing or two now," he said.

His street
Nilsen also performed his new single "My Street" from his upcoming album "A Part Of Me", scheduled for release on BMG on November 8.

"Singing 'My Street' was what was most important for me today, but to win two prizes was also a huge bonus" Nilsen said.

"Now I can hardly wait until the record is released – I incredible impatient. And of course, very anxious to see how the album's received."

Holiday festival
One of the first places Kurt Nilsen will perform following the release of his new album will be in Washington, DC for the tree lighting ceremony at Union Station on November 30. The ceremony, led by Norwegian princess Märtha Louise, also marks the opening of the annual Norwegian Christmas at Union Station holiday festival. Throughout the holiday season, the nation's capital and its surrounding area will take on a distinct Norwegian feel. From a Norwegian menu at Center Café at Union Station to a jazz concert with the talented Silje Nergaard, the festival offers something for everyone.

And for those who would like to hear more of Kurt Nilsen than the few acoustic songs he'll perform at the tree lighting ceremony, there's a concert with the World Idol and his opening act Venke Knutson on December 2 at the legendary Birchmere in Alexandria, VA.
