Obituary for Stig Lorentzen

Stig Lorentzen, the editor of News of Norway, died on June 24. This marks a very special loss to all of us who have had the privilege to be Stig's colleagues and to feel the warmth of his friendship.

(News of Norway, issue 6, 1995)

In obituaries, it is often easy to use empty phrases in describing a dear person who has passed away. In this case - as one of Stig's closest colleagues as well as, I am proud to say, friend - it is difficult to find words to describe his contributions to the daily work of the Embassy and his personal qualities. He was a source of inspiration and creativity, he had a very impressive set of contacts in the Washington area - and was indeed a fine representative for Norway.

Stig Lorentzen had a deeply-felt love for his native Norway combined with a profound respect for his new country, the United States of America. His work for and with the Norwegian-American organizations and communities will be remembered by many throughout the United States. Whenever Stig returned to Washington after a visit to the Midwest, he had a rich store of stories and experiences to relate from his many encounters with Norwegian-American culture.

News of Norway, the Royal Norwegian Embassy and the Norwegian-American communities have lost a supreme collaborator. As his former colleagues we are left with a deep sorrow. May he rest in peace.
