The Slooper Monument Project has been an extensive project about retrieving a bauta (monument stone) from Tysvær in Norway to California, a project which developed from four enthusiasts' interest in Norwegian-American immigration history. Raising an historical marker such as the bauta to honor someone's memory is not an uncommon practice in Norway and has roots back to Viking times. This time it is raised as a dedication to the Norwegian-American Jakob and Serena Slogvik who immigrated to America on a Sloop in 1825.
