Detour: The Landscape of Travel on Film

As a complement to the exhibition Detour at the National Building Museum in Washington D.C., the Museum will present the film series "Detour: The Landscape of Travel on Film" in its Great Hall on February 4 and February 11.

Each February the National Building Museum offers a film series inspired by themes found within an existing or forthcoming exhibition. "Detour" offers an excellent programming opportunity for this winter’s film series.

Films in the series tell the story of a character’s intentional travel from home to a foreign destination. In particular, how their encounter with a new environment either leads to personal transformation or reveals the inherent difficulty of “leaving it all behind.”

The main films will be preceded by segments from two early Norwegian travel films belonging to the Norwegian National Library: “Norway the Tourist Destination” (1929) and “On Motorcycle Across Besseggen” (1930).

Ann Hornaday, Washington Post film critic, and Deborah Sorensen will open the film festival on January 28. In their opening remarks they will connect the main films to the short film segments, as well as the main exhibit.
