Mark your calendar for Vinterdansen, March 3-5. The Skandia Folkdance Society will be welcoming guest fiddlers Paul Dahlin and Carina Biddle from Minneapolis. Paul and Carina specialize in the music from Dalarna in Sweden that Paul learned from his grandfather. Join them throughout the weekend for a full spectrum of Dalarna tunes, from polka to polska.
The weekend kicks off Friday evening with the regularly scheduled First Friday Dance on 3 March at Cedar Valley Grange.
All Saturday events are at the Nordic Heritage Museum, located at 3014 NW 67th in Seattle. The first event of the day is the music workshop from 9 a.m. to noon.All instruments are welcome at the workshop. Teaching will be by ear, so please bring a recording device. Musicians are also asked to play tunes they have learned in the morning workshop at the evening dance during the Allspel.
The dance workshop will be from 2 to 5 p.m., featuring local dance instructors. Dances to be taught include Boda Polska, Bingsjö Polska, and Rättvik Polska. Snacks will be provided. Bring your dance shoes and be ready to turn!
The evening program kicks off with a concert featuring Paul and Carina. The concert begins at 7 p.m. and will run about an hour. Dancing will begin as soon as the floor is cleared of chairs, around 8:15 p.m., and will continue until 11 p.m. The concert/dance ticket is $15. Concert-goers are encouraged to wear folk costumes. The weekend wraps up with a jam session Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. All musicians are invited.
