Norwegian Maritime Presence in the New York Area

Norwegian Maritime History on Display in New York from November 22.

A new exhibit is being prepared at Heritage Hall, Brooklyn.  The gallery is located in the main building of The Norwegian Home and Health Center (NCHHC). An enthusiastic group of researchers have been collecting photographs and artifacts from the Norwegian American community across the United States in order to create a new exhibit at the NCHHC which will deal with the Norwegian influence in the maritime life of the New York City area.

Among the ardent workers on the exhibit are Greta and Don Lafayette, Barbara Govertsen, Doris Lister, Lars Nilsen, Odd Andersen, Harald Haegeland and John Helgesen and a team of volunteers from Long Island, New Jersey and Brooklyn.

Items have come from far and wide - from Arthur Andersen, Illinois; Harold and Steve Andersen, Pennsylvania; Paul Drangeid, Minnesota; Eleanor Enersen, New Jersey; Alf Flodsand, New York; Valerie Mason, Tennesee; David Swanson, Pennsylvania; and tugboat captain Jan Johansen, Pennsylvania, whose pictures were the initial inspiration for this exhibit. Many others still living in the tri-state area who have worked on the waters around New York have sent pictures of their nautical experiences.

The exhibit will include paintings by Odd Andersen, artist and former dockbuilder. The photograph shows him working on a tugboat painting which is the center piece of the show.

When: November 22, 1 PM, Lunch will be available at the center
Where: The Norwegian Christian Home and Health Center,  1270 67 Street, Brooklyn, NY 11219.
