Nordic Spirit Symposium 2006

This year's Nordic Spirit Symposium has been titled "On the Cutting Edge: Leading Scientific, Technological, Environmental and Cultural Developments in the Nordic Countries". It will take place at the California Lutheran University, Thousand Oaks, February 17-18. From Norway, you may listen to former Petroleum and Energy Minister Thorhild Widvey and Vice President of the Sami Parliament, Johan Mikkel Sara.

The Nordic Spirit Symposium 2006, tailored for the public and titled On the Cutting Edge: Leading Scientific, Technological, Environmental and Cultural Developments in the Nordic Countries, at the Samuelson Chapel, California Lutheran University, 60 West Olsen Road, Thousand Oaks, CA 91360,  February 17-18, 2006, will focus on current diverse developments in the Nordic countries and explore topics ranging from shipping, energy and the environment to political and cultural changes for the indigenous Sami.

The list of distinguished presenters, representing Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden, includes:   Thorhild Widvey, former Petroleum and Energy Minister of Norway; Mette Hjort, Professor, Intercultural Studies, Aalborg University; Professor and Program Director, Visual Studies, Lingnan University, Hong Kong; Series Editor, Nordic Film Classics Series, University  of Washington Press; Helena Jonsson Franchi, Swedish Office of Science and Technology, Los Angeles; Craig Randal Johnson, conductor, pianist and string bassist and Finlandia Foundation National Performer of the Year, 1999; Professor Lars A. Kristoferson, Sweden’s prominent environmentalist and Secretary General, WWF-Sweden; Sverre Meling, Jr., President of the Maritime Forum and Secretary of the Shipowners Association out of Haugesund, Norway; Professor Astrid Ogilvie, Institute of Arctic Research, University of Colorado at Boulder;  Johan Mikkel Sara, Vice President of the Sami Parliament, Norway.  Sweden’s own Margareta Svensson will make a special appearance, weaving a musical spell with her unique Nordic blend of traditional, popular and original songs.

The symposium series, now in its seventh successful year, is sponsored by the Scandinavian American Cultural and Historical Foundation (SACHF), a non-profit volunteer organization, in collaboration with California Lutheran University, and is made possible by a generous grant from the Barbro Osher Pro Suecia Foundation with additional support from the Royal Norwegian Consulate General in San Francisco.
