A Norwegian Odyssey

Author and speaker Linda Lawrence Hunt, presents the adventure of Helga Estby, a Norwegian immigrant who set out across the american continent on foot with her daughter to save their farm. The presentation, followed by light refreshments, takes place at the Embassy Residence, Nov. 17, 7 pm.

In 1896, Norwegian immigrant Helga Estby and her teenaged daughter Clara set out across the American continent to win a $10,000 wager to save their farm—on foot. The 36- year-old mother of eight demonstrated extraordinary courage and perseverance during the treacherous journey from Spokane to New York City. Leaving with only $5 each and required to earn their way, the unescorted pair challenged contemporary Norwegian and American assumptions about Victorian femininity.

Because of devastating consequences, their remarkable achievement was blanketed in silence until, a century later, Linda Lawrence Hunt encountered the story. An engaging author and speaker, Dr. Hunt presents Helga’s adventures and tells why the women’s achievement was unknown for so long. Hunt’s research is the basis of her award-winning book Bold Spirit: Helga Estby’s Forgotten Walk Across Victorian America.

Hunt is director of the Krista Foundation for Global Citizenship and former associate professor of English at Whitworth College.
