Marcus Thrane Collection published by NAHA

The Norwegian-American Historical Association (NAHA) recently published a collection of plays by Marcus Thrane (1817 – 1890), a noted advocate of social democracy in Norway and the U.S. during the 19th century.

Thrane, who spent four years in prison in Norway for his activities as a labor leader, brought his causes across the Atlantic after his release. In America he established himself as a critic of the government, and as a writer, editor and speaker proved to be a keen observer of American society.

The plays Thrane wrote while in the U.S. were all written in Norwegian, and performed for Norwegian-speaking audiences. Translator Terje I. Leiren, Professor of Scandinavian Studies, introduces the six plays included in this collection by giving a brief outline of Thrane’s personal and political backdrop, as well as positioning the plays in the Ethnic Theater tradition.
