Thrane, who spent four years in prison in Norway for his activities as a labor leader, brought his causes across the Atlantic after his release. In America he established himself as a critic of the government, and as a writer, editor and speaker proved to be a keen observer of American society.

Leiren, Professor of Scandinavian Studies, introduces the six plays included in this collection by giving a brief outline of Thrane’s personal and political backdrop, as well as positioning the plays in the Ethnic Theater tradition.
