You can submit your application to your nearest Norwegian Foreign Service mission. To locate a Norwegian mission, please visit the Norway Portal.
Norwegian Foreign Service missions only accept applications for machine-readable passports. The applicant must meet in person at a Foreign Service mission when applying for a passport. The passport will be printed in Norway, and the processing time will be approximately 4 weeks. The fee for a passport is USD 65,- for adults. For children under 16 years old USD 40,-.
You will be given a passport application form upon arrival. All applicants are required to meet in person, and sign the application in front of a consular officer.
In addition, be sure to bring the following
- Photo. 1 recent passport photo. The photo must be taken by a professional photographer or at a facility that specializes in taking passport photos. "Homemade" digital photos that are printed on a home-office printer do not qualify. The photo must satisfy the requirements identified in 'Photo Requirements.'
- Your passport. If this is lost or stolen you must bring another photo ID. You must also fill out the form "Loss of passport notification", form (GP-7091). If the passport has been stolen, you must bring the original police report.
- Valid visa or your US Resident Alien Card. If you are a citizen of another country, proof must accompany your application.
- Documentation regarding your Norwegian personal number. Unless your personal number (5-digits) is indicated in your previous passport, please provide an official Norwegian document confirming it (driver’s license, birth certificate, tax return etc.). If you have never been issued a Norwegian personal number, please see below how to obtain one.
How to obtain a Norwegian personal number
- The personal number is a five-digit number issued by Norwegian authorities in addition to your date of birth, e.g. DOB 5 June 1960, + personal number 34567 = birth number: 050660 34567 (equivalent to a social security number). This new requirement applies for first issue, as well as for renewal, of passport. Requests for a personal number must be addressed in letter form directly to:

Additional documentation required for passport applications for minors under age 18

In addition to the above-mentioned documentation, please note applications for minors under age 18 require consent from both parents. Both parents/guardian must appear in person with the minor. Parents’ passports for verification of signature must also be presented.

If it is the child’s first Norwegian passport, the original birth certificate or a certified copy is needed.
Other information
Passports have different validity according to how old the passport holder is when applying.
- Children under 5 years: passport will be valid for 2 years.
- Children between 5 and 10 years: Passports will be valid for 3 years.
- Children between 10 and 16 years: Passports will be valid for 5 years.
- Persons over 16 years: Passports will be valid for 10 years.
If you do not obliterate or hand in your old passport when you apply for renewal, you must bring it with you to the Foreign Service mission when you pick up your new passport. If you do not have the opportunity to pick up your new passport in person, after it has been issued, you must submit with your application a prepaid, self-addressed courier envelope along with the form 'Declaration of Waiver and Hold Harmless.' In the latter case the old passport must be handed in or obliterated when you submit your application.
