17th of May Celebrations in the South

May 17th is a national holiday for Norwegians abroad as well as for those at home. For a real celebration, join the Norwegian Seamen's Church!

To celebrate the Constitution of 1814, the Norwegian Seamen's Churches in Houston, New Orleans and Miami will arrange traditional May 17th parties.

The Seamen's Church in Houston welcomes you to attend their party at thir location in Pasadena. The program starts at 2:00 p.m. and includes a family service, speeches, May 17th parade, food, ice cream, and lots of fun for both children and adults. If you want to help the church in arranging this great day by volunteering or bringing cakes, the church can be reached by e-mail. Entrance is $15 for adults and $10 for children.

In New Orleans the Seamen's Church will start the celebration at 11:00 a.m. with a service in the church. The service will be followed by a May 17th parade for everyone. with music by Christian Winther Streetband. Dinner will be served after the parade. Finally, the day ends with games and activities for everyone.

Celebrations in Miami will take place at the Seamen's Church's new church center in Davies and start at 2:00 p.m. The festivities include a service, a parade with a marching band, food, games, pony riding and music. In addition to opening up the church and "the yellow room", a tent will be set up oustide to provide shaded areas.
