Trygve Morkemo has been awarded with the St. Olav Medal for his outstanding service for Norway in the San Francisco Bay Area. The medal was presented to him at a reception at the Norwegian Consul General's residence in San Francisco May 23, 2008.
Morkemo was born in Åfjord in Sør-Trøndelag. He came to San Francisco as a shipping master for Scandinavian Shipping Inc in 1961 and later started his own company: San Francisco Shipping Service Inc.
He has played an active role in the Norwegian community in the San Francisco area, especially through his contributions to the activities of the Norwegian Consulate General, the Norwegian Seamen's Church and the Norwegian Fish Club. He has been a strong advocat for Norwegian activities in the area, and has been at the forefront in promoting Norwegian interests towards the American Port Authorities. Through his company he has arranged for transport, accomodation and guide services for official guests from Norway, also during royal visits.
Morkemo has for the last twelve years been the president of the Norwegian Fish Club and is on the board of the Norway House Foundation, which supports Norwegian culture and education in North California. His wife, Gerd, is from Stordal, Sunnmøre. The couple lives in Tiburon, Marin County, north of San Francisco. They have two sons, Arne and Trygve Jr., and the entire family is active in the local Norwegian community.
Many Norwegians have received a helping hand and excellent service from Trygve Morkemo. With the St. Olav's Medal he has received a well deserved acknowledgement for his service to his country and countrymen.

Trygve Morkemo er hedret med St. Olavsmedaljen for sin innsats for Norge i the San Francisco Bay Area. Medaljen ble overrakt av generalkonsul Are-Jostein Norheim ved en mottakelse i den norske embetsboligen i San Francisco 23. mai.
Morkemo er født i Åfjord i Sør-Trøndelag. Han kom til San Francisco som hyresjef for de skandinaviske rederiene i 1961, og startet senere sitt eget firma San Francisco Shipping Service Inc.
Han har spilt en svært aktiv rolle i det norske miljøet i San Francisco-området, spesielt gjennom sin innsats for det norske generalkonsulatet, Sjømannskirken og Den norske Fiskeklub. Han har vært en pådriver for norsk aktivitet i området, og har stått i spissen for å fremme norske interesser overfor amerikanske havnemyndigheter. Gjennom sitt kontaktnett har han bidratt til gode forbindelser mellom norske myndigheter og amerikansk havnevesen. Med sitt firma har han besørget transport, overnatting og guiding for offisielle gjester fra Norge, blant annet ved kongelige besøk.
Morkemo har de siste tolv årene vært president for Den norske Fiskeklub, og sitter i styret for Norway House Foundation, som yter betydelig støtte til utbredelse av norsk kultur og utdanning i Nord-California. Hans kone Gerd er fra Stordal på Sunnmøre, og paret er bosatt i Tiburon i Marin County like nord for San Francisco. Sammen har de sønnene Arne og Trygve Jr., og hele familien er aktivt engasjert i det norske miljøet i området.
Mange er de nordmenn som har fått en hjelpende hånd og den aller beste service av Trygve Morkemo. Med St. Olavsmedaljen får han en velfortjent takk for sin tjeneste for sitt land og sine landsmenn.
