”Illusions”, Elling Reitan at Westwood Gallery, New York

Former Odd Nerdrum student Elling Reitan is now among the most famous artists in Norway. In 2000, he was chosen to be the "Nobel Artist of the Year". Artistically he uses a combination of the abstract and the naturalistic, with elements of the surrealistic.

Elling Reitan’s source of inspiration and theme choice often stems from dream and fantasy life. The painters visual universe is populated by Madonna-like women, presented in more than one dimension – a holy figure with an ambiguous expression that undermines the sacred symbol – as well as contemporary versions themes from Greek mythology. His dreamlike landscapes have burning red skies, emerald green fields and cobalt blue rivers; here several realities intermingle and a new allegorical world comes into being. Reitan has found his expression in a combination of abstract and representational imagery with surrealist notes, marking the return to the mystical and sacred dimension of art.
