Norwegian artist Lars Elling displays his collection Dreams of Escape at the Briggs Robinson Gallery in New York this November and December.
Lars Elling lives and works in Oslo, Norway. Elling has previously contributed to The National Gallery of Art in Oslo, The European Commission and the Norwegian Council for Cultural Affairs. This is the second solo exhibition of his work at the Briggs Robinson Gallery.
Exploring the indeterminate area between figuration and abstraction, the paintings of Lars Elling embrace the lineage of many of European twentieth century painting's more interesting pictorial innovations. Showing affinity with the work of his compatriot Munch, Elling's work creates enigmatic narratives within dreamlike pictorial spaces, elegantly layering the planes through a unique combination of perspective and glazing. Bathed in a diffuse Northern light, these exquisite paintings reinvigorate, even reinvent, the genre of the bourgeois interior scene. Through their delicate sfumato, the paintings variously evoke the humor, pathos, and other psychological nuances of contemporary human interaction.
