Silverdocs Film Festival presenting "Raw Youth"

From June 14 to 19 a whole range of documentaries are accessible to the public. Among these, the highly acclaimed Norwegian documentary "Raw Youth," by filmmaker Margreth Olin.

The Silverdocs Film Festival is relatively new, but has quickly established itself as one of the most important film festivals in North America. Last year the festival also included a Norwegian film in its program, "Gunnar Goes Comfortable" by Gunnar Hall Jensen. The festival is a collaboration between the American Film Institute and the Discovery Channel and takes place in Silver Springs, MD.

"Raw Youth" is an honest and thought provoking documentary, made following the dogma film principles, and telling the story of young Norwegian teenagers. It captures the challenges the sixteen year old kids face in the form of racism, struggles amongst themselves and not being understood by teachers and adults. The film follows the teenagers from Hauketo Ungdomskole in Oslo in preparations for their final exams. It paints a picture of the multicultural Norway in a classroom where all the great religions are represented, different cultures and languages are spoken, and contradicting opinions of life and its expectations are portrayed.

Filmmaker Margreth Olin has established herself as a master of the documentary art and follows the rules of dogma film principles laid down by Lars von Trier. Her earlier films include "My Body" from 2002 and "In the House of Love" from 1994. "Raw Youth" was released in Norwegian Theatres in November last year and is still running.

When: Wednesday, June 15, 5.30 pm.
Where: AFI Silver Theatre and Cultural Center, 8633 Colesville Road, Silver Spring, MD 20919
