Norwegian Golfer Optimistic as PGA Tour Begins in Hawaii

Henrik Bjørnstad, the first Norwegian to qualify for the PGA tour, is aiming to finish among the 30 best players.

The 26-year-old golfer's self confidence was further improved by a successful trial run at the Waialae golf course in Hawaii.

"I think I can even win a tournament this season," Bjørnstad told Aftenposten. "But my goal is to finish among the top 30."

144 of the world's best golfers play in the Hawaii tournament, and Bjørnstad's first challenge is to make the cut and be among the 70 who get to play on Saturday and Sunday.

"It would have been nice to get a good start here, but I have enough routine to know that there will be plenty of opportunities to do well later," Bjørnstad said. "I'm going to be playing 30 tournaments this year, so there's really no hurry."

After a turbulent season last year, in which Bjørnstad very nearly gave up his golfing altogether, he entered Norwegian golf history when he finally qualified for the tour in December after a dramatic qualifying session in Florida.

"Now I'm not nervous at all," Bjørnstad told Aftenposten. "I am very well prepared and I have plenty of experience with from large tournaments, not least from when I played in the qualifying stages."

The Sony Open at Waialae Country Club is scheduled to finish on Sunday, and the tournament's winner can cash in a cool $864,000.
