Tusen takk, Amerika: Christmas at Union Station

Last updated: 12/8/2012 // Christmas is coming, and the Norwegian Embassy is getting ready for what is the most important holiday in Norway. This week the embassy said thank you to America at the annual tree lighting ceremony at Union Station in Washington, D.C.

A tradition begun in 1996, the tree is a gift from the people of Norway to the people of America as thanks for the assistance during and after World War II, and for your continued friendship ever since.

At the tree lighting ceremony, ambassador Wegger Chr. Strømmen said thank you to the United States in gratitude for sacrifices made by the U.S. to free Norway from occupation during World War II.
– This is a great tradition that I am very proud to be part of. What we realize is that although Norway is a country far away, our history and common interests bring us together in so many ways, the ambassador said.

The tree was lit by U.S. Under Secretary of the Navy Robert Work. In his speech he highlighted the close military relationship between the United States and Norway.
– Many places in the world where there is conflict, you will find the U.S. and Norway working side by side. Throughout the years, Norway and the U.S. have had a good working cooperation in securing the High North, through extensive exercises and training together in the harsh climate of the Arctic, he said.
