The Smithsonian Associates hosts public programs in partnership with the Royal Norwegian Embassy throughout the fall, in addition to numerous other events in the area to commemorate Norway's centennial.

The Smithsonian Associates hosts public programs in Washington, D.C., throughout the fall in partnership with the Royal Norwegian Embassy - featuring outstanding performers, scientists, writers, and historians, to celbrate Norway's centennial. The events embrace themes like Norwegian history and culture, polar history and research, topics of peace and conflict resolution, and the legacy of Norwegian immigrants in the United States.

October 22 - mid April 2006
FROST:  Life and Culture of the Sámi - Reindeer People of Norway
Norwegian Sámi photographer Fred Ivar Utsi Klemetsen’s photo essay “FROST” documents the life of those who still herd their reindeer the traditional way - at the National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian.

Holiday Model Train at Union Station

A special Norwegian Holiday menu has been created by TV-chef of the series "Scandinavian Cooking", Andreas Viestad. Taste his Norwegian Salmon and other dishes Nov. 25 - Dec. 31 at Center Café, Union Station, Washington, DC.

Gledelig jul! A Norwegian Christmas Celebration 
Karin Brennisvik and her partners Sigbjorn & Tom, Hardanger fiddler Loretta Kelley, host Oran Sandel, and singers from the Washington Revels present a traditional Norwegian Holiday Program with audience participation, at Baird Auditorium, National Museum of Natural History, Washington D.C.

The Rescue Artist / Book Signing 
Ever wondered how The Scream got stolen? Author Edward Dolnick goes behind the scene of the theft and global search for the Edward Munch painting in his new book, the Rescue Artist, at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., Mon., October 17, 7 pm.

Chamber Music performed by the Coucherons 
Award winning brother-sister duo David (piano) and Julie Coucheron (violin), the youngest artists ever to play Grieg's 3 sonatas, presents a romanticly virtuosic consert of  Paganini, Grieg, Bull and Chopin, followed by a Norwegian buffet reception, at the Norwegian Ambassador's residence.

A symbol of the pristine Arctic environment, polar bears excite great interest. World-renowned expert Jon Aars tracks the polar bear's yearly cycle of life and discusses its defining characteristics

More than 6,000 Norwegian immigrants fought in the Union Army during the Civil War. Lecture based on their letters written in Norwegian, by historian Karl Jakob Skarstein.

Great Voices
Marianne Stecher-Hansen and Tina Nunnally showcase the lives and careers of the Norwegian winners of the Nobel Prize in Literature: Sigrid Undset and Knut Hamsun.

Munch - Norwegian Icon 
Edward Munch's paintings are internationally recognized for their vivid portrayal of complex psychological themes. Gerd Woll, senior curator at the Munch Museum in Oslo, analyzes Munch's work.

Polar explorer Liv Arnesen presents a visual journey of Norwegian explorers, witj journalist-explorer Ragnar Kvam, and Noel Broadbent, Nordic archaeologist at the National Museum of Natural History.

In 1896. Norwegian Immigrant Helga Estby and her teenager daughter Clara set out across the American continent on foot - to win a $ 10,000 wager to save their farm. Author Linda Lawrence Hunt tells the story.

Taste Norwegian cooking at its best. Menu composed by chef Andreas Viestad, author of Kitchen of Light: New Scandinavian Cooking.

All-day seminar on Ibsen and Grieg by Harald Herresthal, professor of music, Norwegian Academy og Music, Univ. of Oslo, and Mary Kay Norseng, professor of Scandinavian studies, UCLA.

Toys for Tots Regional Kick-off and Model Train Launch 

See the giant Norwegian holiday model train winding its way through the mountains and fjords of Norway. The event marks the annual kick-off for the 2005 U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots campaign. Union Staions Main and West Hall.

Opening Ceremony Unions Station: Tree Lightening and Concert  
The switch is flipped for the 8,000 lights on the magnificent 30-foot Christmas tree. Musical performance by jazz guitarist Lage Lund. The Washington National Cathedral Choral Society sings Norwegian and American Christmas Carols. Union Station's Main Hall.

Bazaar  
Norwegian-American organizations host a shopping extravaganza featuring traditional crafts from Norway, including hand made items, jewelry, calendars, trolls, dolls, holiday ornaments, pewter items, and sweaters – and food. Union Station's Main Hall.

FREE Consert with Geir Draugsvoll
 
The National Gallery of Art features Norwegian accordionist Geir Draugsvoll for a free consert in Washington D.C.

December 7 
Concert with Lage Lund at Blues Alley 
Norwegian jazz guitarist Lage Lund, winner of the September 2005 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition, in concert at Blues Alley.

Joy of Christmas at the Washington National Cathedral 
The Cathedral Choral Society celebrates the Norwegian Centennial by performing traditional and contemporary Norwegian Christmas music. World premiere of a specially comissioned Norwegian carol.
