More Norwegian babies

Following three years of falling birth figures, the number of newborns was 800 higher in the first quarter of 2004 than in the same period last year. One in four newborns were born in or around Oslo.

3/27/2006 :: There were 14.350 live births and 11.250 deaths in the first quarter of 2004, compared with 13.600 and 11.300 in the first quarter of 2003. The natural growth of 3.100 is 900 higher than in the same period last year and has not been higher since 1996. It must be noted, however, that figures for one quarter may be affected by random variations.

Less immigration
In the first quarter of this year 7.500 persons moved to Norway and 5.500 moved from Norway, compared with 8 800 and 5.400 in the same period last year. The net migration is thus 1.400 lower than in the same period last year and has not been lower in the first three months of the year since 1997. All counties except Vestfold experienced net migration from abroad. The figures from one quarter are often influenced by variations and the immigration authorities' priorities.

The highest immigration flows of foreign citizens were from Liberia, Somalia, Germany and Thailand. Norwegian citizens had the highest emigration figure, as 2.100 moved from Norway and 1.900 moved to Norway. Emigration was also higher than immigration among Iraqis (200 against 100).

The largest internal migration flows were to Oslo and the neighboring county of Akershus.

Population growth of 5.100
The preliminary total population figure per 1 April 2004 is 4.582.600. The natural increase of 3.100 and the net migration of 2.000 result in a population growth of 5.100 in the first quarter of 2004.
