Sharpening the Knife Before Embassy Chef Challenge

Last updated: 4/5/2011 // Norwegian Embassy chef Jan-Erik Hauge demonstrated his skills on U.S. television, promoting the fact that he is competing in the "Embassy Chef Challenge," Cultural Tourism D.C.’s annual fundraising benefit.

Tuesday, Jan-Erik Hauge appeared on Washington, D.C. Fox 5 promoting the popular Embassy Chef Challenge. He prepared a baked cod salad, which included fresh Norwegian cod, bacon and a poached egg.

“Being the residence chef has been a fantastic experience for me,” Hauge told reporter Holly Morris as he cut the bacon for his gourmet dish. “Working in D.C. gives me the chance to meet many great chefs, and this competition is a great opportunity to connect.”

Washington, D.C. has become an attractive destination for top chefs from around the globe. Created in 2009, the Embassy Chef Challenge is a way to celebrate the many talents.

"It’s an honor to be the Embassy Executive Chef,” Hauge said. “It’s also a great challenge to always represent your country through the food that you prepare.”

Having just turned 21, Hauge is the youngest contestant in the challenge, competing against 12 other embassy chefs. The “Top Chef” style competition concludes at the World Bank on April 12 and has become an annual fundraising benefit for the Cultural Tourism organization, featuring international tastings, awards, entertainment, and a world-class silent auction.

On the evening of April 12, the contestants will prepare hors d'œuvres showcasing their own cuisine and talent. After defending their country’s culinary honor, the winner will be announced by a panel of judges.

“My ambition is obviously to win,” Hauge confided with a smile.
