Tomorrow is Nordic Food Day

Last updated: 10/3/2011 // After bringing some of the world’s best chefs to the U.S., the Nordic Embassies are now preparing to bring Nordic food to a smaller, yet very important audience: the students at Washington, D.C.’s public schools.

Calling the audience small is an understatement, as a total of 60,000 healthy and wholesome Nordic meals will be served in the DCPS tomorrow, Thursday, October 26. Norwegian salmon, Swedish meatballs and Icelandic Skyr are among the Nordic treats introduced to kindergarten through 8th grade during Nordic Day. The event is the first in a pilot program where the DCPS collaborates with Embassies in DC in an effort to expose students to new foods and to the cultures and customs of the countries being featured. Nordic Food Day focuses on healthy and nutritious food as this is a hallmark of the Nordic diet.

In collaboration with D.C. Public Schools and the Office of Food and Nutrition Services, 130 D.C. public schools will be served Nordic breakfast, lunch and dinner. In five selected schools, the children will also participate in educational and cultural activities, learning more about the five countries from the North and enjoying food experiences that may be new to them but which are everyday experiences for Nordic children.

The Norwegian Embassy is especially proud to have Brookland Elementary as our adopted school through the Embassy Adoption Program in D.C., and we hope to make it a special day. The children will be visited by embassy staffers in Norwegian national costume, play traditional Norwegian outdoor games and learn more about the country’s culture and traditions. Other schools will be visited by Nordic cultural ambassadors, chefs and musicians. There will also be a special visit from HRH Prince Daniel of Sweden.
