Printed Matter presents the fifth annual NY Art Book Fair, November 4–7 at MoMA PS1, Long Island City, Queens in New York. The Fair features the Norwegian non-profit organisation Torpedo, Fukt Magazine, Kurt Johannessen and artists Nils Bech and Bendik Giske. Bech and Giske will perform November 4th at 7pm in the Conference Room at PS1.
Free and open to the public, the Fair hosts over 200 international presses, booksellers, antiquarian dealers, artists and publishers from twenty countries, offering the best in contemporary art book publishing.
Philip Aarons, Chairman of the Board of Printed Matter, said: “The NY Art Book Fair is the premiere venue to find what's new in art publishing. While it has spawned the next generation of independent art book fairs world-wide, it remains the biggest, the best, and by far the most fun.”
The NY Art Book Fair includes special project rooms, screenings, book signings, and performances, throughout the weekend. Other events include the third annual Contemporary Artists’ Books Conference, and The Classroom, a curated series of informal conversations between artists, together with readings, workshops and other artist-led events.
About Torpedo:
Torpedo is a non-profit (project-based) organization devoted to the promotion and production of artists’ books, art theory and critical readers in contemporary art. Situated in Trelastgata, Oslo, Torpedo is both a publisher and a bookstore, and occasionally a venue for exhibitions and concerts related to book launches and the process of publishing, or discursive activities like panel discussions and debates.
Founded in 2005 by Elin Maria Olaussen, Karen Christine Tandberg, Eivind Slettemeås, Pia Søndergaard and Anna Carin Hedberg, Torpedo came about after the execution of the former bookstore at the Museum of Contemporary art in 2004, a result of the political merging of five major museums and institutions into the National Museum of art, Design and architecture. With the continued trend of shutting down independent bookstores for the benefit and domination of bigger and fewer traders, Torpedo is emphasizing the interest in strengthening the field of production and distribution of artists` books and small publishers publications in Norway. This also reflects our work internationally on distribution, presentation and collaborations with artists, critics, writers, institutions and curators.
As a publisher Torpedo Press ́program range from fanzine productions to essay series and artists ́ books. Additional activities include research and curatorial practice aiming to investigate historical and contemporary production of printed matter, and different strategies in publishing.
Torpedo is partially funded by arts Council Norway, The Freedom of Expression Foundation and Nordic Culture Point.
