FFEAR at Miller Theatre, New York

Miller Theatre at Columbia University kicks off its 2010-2011 Jazz series with genre-bending improvisational group FFEAR (Forum for Electro-Acoustic Research), Led by Saxophonist Ole Mathisen and trombonist Chris Washburne, on Saturday October 23rd at 8:00pm.

Acclaimed soloists and frequent collaborators, the musicians of FFEAR have been called a “pointedly cosmopolitan post-bop collective” (The New York Times). The quartet will give the world premiere of Mirage, an adventurous new work by Ole Mathisen that plays with meter, tempo, and tonality in remarkably innovative ways. And heard for the first time in a jazz setting, they will interpret the musical scores of artist Frederick Sommer. The program will feature other genre-bending and blending selections, including blurring works by Charles Ives and Arne Nordheim. Mirage has been made possible with support from Chamber Music America's 2009 New Jazz Works: Commissioning and Ensemble Development program funded by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation.

FFEAR is:
Ole Mathisen – saxophones and clarinet
Chris Washburne – trombone and tuba
Per Mathisen – bass
Tony Moreno – drums

Special Guests:
Andy Ezrin – piano
Stephanie Roudousakis – mezzo
Becky Lu - piano

Tickets: $25 • Students $15 with valid ID
