The Norwegian saxophonist Håkon Kornstad at Monkeytown, NY

When the Norwegian musician Håkon Kornstad plays his sought-after solo saxophone concerts, it's more about spontaneous composition and arranging à la Brian Eno or Terry Riley, than your typical free improv blow-out night. Konstad's performs his solo saxofone set on December 3 at 8pm in Williamsburg, NY.

AllAboutJazz writes: "The music may be all-improvised, but even when creating something from nothing, Kornstad thinks compositionally, with the three-chord vamp of "Oslo" easily convertible to a pop tune, were he to add other players. But, in reality, Kornstad doesn't need a bassist, a drummer, a guitarist, a keyboardist; what makes it so compelling is its possession of everything a song needs, from the bass saxophone riff, peppered with percussive hits, to his layered tenor harmonies and motif-driven melodies. Created in-the-moment, it's also perfectly constructed."

The Norwegian saxophonist Håkon Kornstad has a deeply focused tone and a dazzling command of expressive effects. He puts it all to good use on “Dwell Time” (Jazzland), his serene but potent new solo album. —The New York Times
