In collaboration with the Embassy of Norway and the New York Opera Society, the National Gallery of Art will present the world premiere performance of a new opera by Norwegian composer Gisle Kverndokk.
Carrying the intriguing title Max und Moritz: A Cartoon Opera in Seven Pranks, this children’s opera is based on a story of two adolescent pranksters that was popular throughout Europe in the mid-nineteenth century. The modern-day version of the story comes from the pen of librettist Øystein Wiik and makes many humorous references to childhood in the electronic age.
Composer Kverndokk has come up with a musical score that will delight young and old, and the production is under the direction of the award-winning German stage director Joachim Schamberger. The opera is recommended for adults and children age nine and up. Performed in English. Admission free, first come, first seated at 6:30 pm.
