The Norwegian artist Margrethe Aanestad will be showing the site-specific installation “HEREIN" at Open Source Gallery in Park Slope in Brooklyn, opening on April 6, 7-9 pm.

Aanestad's work explores drawing and sculpture as a way to define and transform space. Paper, as well as color, becomes an important and active spatial agent in her work, as the drawings transcend the two-dimensional format and become finely-tuned sculptural, architectural objects. Her process reveals time and presence through a tactile surface and traces of imperfection combined with minimal expression.
Combining her drawings with objects, often found, such as styrofoam and laminated boards, Aanestad builds and constructs assemblages that enhance and respond to the drawings and vice versa. Her sculptures investigate what happens between the materials that she juxtaposes in stacked, leaning and piled variations. I this way what is seen and not seen, physical and imaginative spaces, tactility and immateriality is explored. Aanestad responds in a site-specific way to the space, transmitting personal presence and revealing negotiation between intention, intuition, and coincidence.
Aanestad (b. 1974, Stavanger, Norway) is based in Stavanger and New York. She is inspired by the Norwegian light and atmosphere, which is reflected in her work. Aanestad participated in The National Autumn Exhibition at Kunstnernes Hus in Norway (2011), as well as Between Mountain at Open Source Gallery (2012). Her work was shown in a solo show at Untitled Art Fair in Miami (2012) and will be exhibited at Galería Des Pacio De La Cruz in Costa Rica (2013) and at Interno4 in Bologna, Italy (2013).
