Thomas Pihl exhibition in New York
Thomas Pihl
Prearticulation No 5 2009 Oil on Canvas
Heiberg Cummings is pleased to announce an exhibition of new works by the Norwegian painter Thomas Pihl, on view from November 12th to December 23rd, 2009, at 420 West. 25th Street, 1C, NYC. There will be an opening reception Thursday November 12th, 6-8 PM. The exhibition is curated by Turid Meeker.
The new paintings are the result of an on-going investigation into the properties and potentials of the acrylic medium. Thomas Pihl has lived in New York since 1994 and the city is a constant source of inspiration. “The drive behind my artistic activity is the immense production of aesthetics western culture has developed in relation to capitalism and global expansion. Beauty and value are confused with perfection (as representation of truth), and we are getting more and more addicted to it.” (Thomas Pihl, July 2003)
The artist has worked on the Pre-articulation series since 2000, and this body of work is a continuation of this series. The paintings consist of layer upon layer of semi-transparent acrylic paint that the artist pours onto the canvas with calculated control. A seemingly smooth surface results that on closer inspection reveals tiny imperfections and flaws that are intrinsic elements of each work. In the new paintings less and less of these imperfections are evident and the first impression of perfection almost fulfills expectation.
Thomas Pihl has had many one-person exhibitions and participated in numerous group shows and his work is in important private and public collections, including the private collection of Her Majesty Queen Sonia of Norway. The artist was born in Bergen, Norway, in 1964 and lives and works in New York City.
