About the Artist

Majestically precise and crisply crystalline in composition, Norwegian artist Trond Are Berge photographs nature with a carefully articulated accuracy. Using the land and its contours as subjects, Berge’s photographs, melodically illuminated, build subtle but richly textural cumulative themes. Light cascades in epic, harmonious tones oscillating between darkness and brightness, allowing us to meditate on our considerations of the natural world. Indeed, the artist’s relationship as a Norwegian to natural elements such as wood, fire and water shapes and constructs the narratives and compositions of his photographs. Light is always central in these photographs, breathing vibrant nuance and character into stoic, classical perspectives of land and coast. A self-taught artist, Berge creates out of his unyielding respect for the land and life of his native Norwegian coast; a sentiment which is in poignantly palpable in his works, which epitomize his statement that “My studio is nature.”

Trond Are Berge lives and works in his native Norway and works as a Mountain Park Ranger. His photographs have appeared widely in several books, Norwegian television (Nrk), magazines and newspapers.
