Liv Arnesen was the first woman to ski alone and unsupported to the South Pole in 1994 and has done a number of polar expeditions with Ann Bancroft.
Alex Thorpe and Noah Chutz won last year's essay contest. They had a thrilling time while learning about climate change at the Norwegian Polar Institute in the arctic city of Tromsø.
The Royal Norwegian Embassy Essay Competition was open for current full-time graduate and undergraduate students from American University. The prize is an adventurous trip from Washington, D.C., to the Norwegian Polar Institute in the Arctic city of Tromsø, Norway, in mid-May, 2010. The competition now closed.
The essay question for this year’s contest was: ‘Write a policy brief for world leaders connecting the physical, legal, and geopolitical implications of melting ice, including a proposal for how polar issues should be addressed collaboratively by the eight Arctic nations. The Essay should not be longer than 1,250 words’.
Currently the essay contest is open for American University students only. The Norwegian Embassy may consider collaboration on essay contests with other universities in the future.
