Minister of Research and Higher Education Tora Aasland opened Science Week 2008 in Ottawa together with Canada’s deputy Minister of International Trade, Marie-Lucie Morin. In Washington D.C. Kathie Olsen, Deputy Director, National Science Foundation and Nina Fedoroff, Science Adviser to the US Secretary of State held opening keynote speaches from the US side, while Kyrre Lekve, Political adviser to Minister Aasland, and Arvid Hallén, Director General, Research Council of Norway held opening speeches from the Norwegian side. Robert H Shoemaker, Chief, Screening Technologies Branch, NCI held the opening keynote for the TRISCancer symposium at Carnegie Institution, and Sharon Hrynkow, Associate Director, NIEHS, welcomed the Science Week Biobank Symposium to the Stone House at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda. More than 125 speakers contributed to the high quality of this year’s program with a total of more than 350 registered participants for the Museum of Civilizations in Ottawa, The Carnegie Institution for Science in Washington DC and at the NIH in Bethesda MD.   • Two High Schools in Oslo and Washington DC have biotech programs and research partners.
