Edvard Munch’s iconic The Scream (1895), among the most celebrated and recognized images in art history, will be on view at The Museum of Modern Art for a period of six months. Of the four versions of The Scream made by Munch between 1893 and 1910, this pastel-on-board from 1895 is the only one remaining in private hands; the three other versions are in the collections of museums in Norway. From February 15th until April 26th, Riitta Ikonen and Karoline Hjorth will be working on a new chapter in their series Eyes as Big as Plates as part of Recess’s signature program, Session. Session invites artists to use Recess’s public space as studio, exhibition venue, and grounds for experimentation. Over the course of their Session, Ikonen and Hjorth will create costumes and photographs in collaboration with senior residents of New York who show a marked connection to their national and cultural roots. The resulting works will be on show in Red Hook throughout the residency, with reception and presentation at March 22nd.Read more >
The hardcore favorites of Kvelertak will be playing in NYC at Webster Hall on the National Day of Norway, on May 17. The band is going on an extended U.S. tour this spring, joined by the metal bands Cancer Bats and Black tusk. Equally loved by fans and critics, Kvelertak is known for their high energy shows and performing with Norwegian lyrics. Kvelertak (meaning stranglehold or chokehold) is a six-piece black n roll band from Stavanger, Norway, formed in 2007. Between Coasts is a multimedia exhibition about emigration from Western Norway to the U.S. Presented by The Western Norway Emigration Centre and Trygve Lie Gallery, it focuses on the act of leaving home and finding another: between deep fjords and skyscrapers. The Norwegian director Hisham Zaman and his movie Before Snowfall will be the only Nordic contender in the World Narrative Competition at this year's Tribeca Film Festival. Before Snowfall is an untraditional road movie about family, love, dignity and honor. The feature just won the Dragon Award Best Nordic Film at Göteborg International Film Festival in Sweden. "Insects: Real and Imaginary," an extensive survey of bold and colorful insect-inspired paintings by Claus Hoie (b. Stavanger, Norway, 1911 - d. East Hampton, NY, 2007) will be on view at Clinton Academy Museum, from June 1 through June 30. Watercolors in the exhibition span the last three decades of the artist's life. A number have been shown in museums and galleries in New York and elsewhere, but many are on view for the first time. The largest works represent Hoie's focus during his final years and this group includes pieces that were made for presentation at the National Academy of Design Museum.
