Groundbreaking ceremony at SFMOMA

Last updated: 5/30/2013 // A ceremonial groundbreaking was held May 29 at SFMOMA in San Francisco to kick off the museum's extension work. The Norwegian architecture firm Snøhetta is in charge of designing the new expansion that will be open for the public in 2016.

San Francisco Mayor Edwin Lee, Director of SFMOMA Neal Benezra, and Craig Dykers, founder of Snøhetta, were just some of the distinguished guests who attended the ceremony. The celebratory groundbreaking marked the beginning of the expansion and also the launch of the off-site exhibitions and programs.

From June 3, 2013 through early 2016 the museum’s exhibitions and programs will be presented at off-site locations while the original museum building is closed for expansion. The Snøhetta expansion will add 235,000 square feet to the museum. SFMOMA’s new building will include seven new levels dedicated to diverse art experiences and programming spaces, and housing enhanced support space for the museum’s operations. It will offer approximately 130,000 feet of indoor and outdoor gallery space and 15,000 square feet of art-filled free-access public space.

This week's festivities at the museum include a celebratory kickoff party, 24-hour live art variety show, all-night gallery access, family day and more. Museum admission is free to all, Thursday, May 30 through Sunday, June 2.
