Now: Last chance to mail your family’s immigrant story

Mail in your story to the lodge or e-mail leiferiksonlodge@qwestoffice.net along with a photo of the immigrant at 300 dpi or 1200x1800 pixels. Subject line: Immigrant story for (person’s name).

Now: Screening of Kon-Tiki

Kon-Tiki is currently playing at the Harvard Exit Theatre in Seattle. The film portrays the true voyage of Norwegian explorer Thor Heyerdahl, who crossed the Pacific Ocean in a balsa wood raft in 1947. Together with five men, Heyerdahl set sail to prove that South Americans already back in pre-Columbian times could have crossed the sea and settled on Polynesian islands. Kon-Tiki is directed by Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg (Max Manus: Man of War). Cast: Pål Sverre Hagen, Anders Baasmo Christiansen, Gustaf Skarsgård, Odd-Magnus Williamson, Tobias Santelman.

Wednesday June 5, 7:00 p.m.: Screening of Through Hell and High Water

Film by Elly Taylor. Story of Archie Kelly, a Scottish sailor, and Nancy Eide, a Norwegian refugee, who meet under incredible circumstances. Their dramatic rescue by the Royal Navy and US Merchant Marine is marked by German attacks and surviving one of the worst storms recorded on the North Sea. Nancy, then age 21, is aboard one of several ships that sink in stormy seas of 40-50 foot waves. Archie rescues her from the icy waters. They fall in love and get married within weeks of the war’s end. Admission is free seating is limited. Donations welcome to support Bergen Place Mural Restoration project. Thursday June 6 -Saturday June 8: Last deadline for anniversary photo

Absolutely last chance to get you and your family’s photo for our 110th anniversary photo directory. Professional photographs of our Leif Erikson Lodge 2-001 households for the 110th Anniversary Edition Directory are scheduled at our hall. This historic, keepsake edition book will not be complete without you in it! Sign up and be photographed--one person in the photo needs to be a member of LEL. We encourage you to wear your Norwegian folk costume/bunad or Norwegian sweaters for the session! (Every household photographed will receive a complimentary 8X10. You must be 18 years old or older unless photographed with your family.) With lots of goodies and music! The crew is planning some great special Norwegian food that day!

Saturday June 8, 5:00 p.m. -8:00 p.m.: Second Saturday Happy Hour

$5 light supper and refreshments. Regular bar drinks also including wine, beer and soft drinks. Great prizes on the raffle table. Bring some finger food snacks for the food table and receive some free raffle tickets as a thank you. Members just drop in. Guests are most welcome and sign in on the guest list. Good evening of conversation and socializing!

Saturday June 15 at 7: 00 p.m. -11:30 p.m. and Sunday June 16 at 9:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m.: Vasa Park Midsummer

Saturday June 22, 11:00 a.m. - midnight: Midsommer at Norway Park.

Games and activities for kids, bingo, cake walk, dance at night, raffle, bonfire, alletiders kafe, amphicar rides. Lodge members and their guests are invited. Admission is $5, kids 16 and under free!

Monday June 24 -Friday June 28, 9:00 a.m.- 3:00 p.m.: Norse gods at the Heritage Day Camp for kids.

Registration deadline is June 11. Heritage Camp is open to boys and girls ages 7-11 and will be a week of fun activities and crafts related to Norse gods! The cost for the heritage camp is $85 for members of Leif Erikson Lodge (a substantial savings from the regular $150 registration for non-members of the NHM or LEL). Reservations are necessary by contacting Alison Church at 206-789-5707, ext 19 or alisonc@nordicmusuem.org To be eligible for the $85 LEL tuition be sure to give Alison your Leif Erikson Lodge Sons of Norway membership number. You can register your kids, grandkids, nieces and nephews. Campers are to bring their own sack lunch, but one of the camp days a special Swedish meatball and potato lunch will be provided. Co-sponsored by the Nordic Heritage Museum and Leif Erikson Lodge!

Sunday June 30, 11:00 a.m. -6:00 p.m.: Skandia Midsommarfest at Saint Edward State Park, 14445 Juanita Driver, NW, Kenmore, WA.

The Midsommarfest is presented by Skandia Folkdance Society, and is a traditional Swedish celebration of the summer solstice, recreated in as authentic a manner as possible, Midsommarfest activities, including music, dancing, food and crafts, all begin a 11:00 a.m. The grand parade and raising of the majstang (garlanded midsommar pole) are at 2:30 p.m. Spectators are invited to help hoist the 45-foot pole with their muscles or cheers, and then to join in the rousing langdans (serpentine running dance) around the pole, accompanied by the stirring music of massed musicians. Participation dancing follows on the main stage while entertainment, food, crafts activities and good times continue throughout the park grounds. FREE!

Tuesday August 13, 6:00 p.m.: Norwegian music and dancing featuring the Poulsbo Leikarringen dancers and Barneleikarringen at the wild Salmon dinner at Leif Erikson Hall.

We look forward to seeing these young people, many whom have attended Norsk Folkedans Stemne for years, displaying their talents including the challenging halling. Our chefs for the evening will be newlyweds, Tom Berglund and Bonnie Cook, along with Gerry Folkestad and Karin Gustafson. Tickets are available from Norsk Folkedans Stemne, PO Box 17099, Seattle WA 98127. Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for children 12 and under. Tickets at the door at $25. Friday August 16 -Sunday August 18: Norsk Folkedans Stemne at the Cascadian Center at Camp Brotherhood

The event takes place near Lake McMurray and Norway Park. Featured instructors are Tobias Svenningsen. On Saturday and Sunday, Tobias will be teaching the Valdresspringar, a running dance in 3/4 time, known for its strong, syncopated rhythm and energetic turns. Fiddler Bill Boyd will be accompanying Tobias during his sessions. Ginny Lee and Toby Weinberg have been performing and teaching Norwegian dance and music together as part of the ensemble Vestafor for more than a decade. Toby has a special interest in teaching the ways in which the music molds and enlivens the dance. Ginny was the leader of the Nordahl Greig Barneleikarring for around 10 years. She has taught workshops and courses for adult and children’s dance groups across the country. Jane Johnson is bringing her button accordion and will be teaching some new tunes! Jeff Anderson has been playing fiddle since the age of 15. Both of his grandfathers were Norwegian-style fiddlers from North Dakota, and he is carrying on the musical traditions of his family. Both he and Jane play with Nordic Spirit, formed in 1999. Friday and Saturday night dances to live music at the camp.

Saturday August 17, 1:00 p.m. -5:00 p.m.: Norway Park’s 50th anniversary and lodge picnic

Celebrating family, friends and traditions at the Norway Park pavilion. 1PM: coffee, displays, guest signin, items for sale. 2PM Lunch served, meatballs, potato salad, rolls, anniversary cake and potluck salads and desserts. 3PM program. 3:30 raffle and quilt raffle. 4PM tree planting and kids’ games.
