Last updated: 9/19/2013 // Every year the Mill Valley Film Festival (MVFF) brings filmmakers and film lovers together in Mill Valley, San Rafael and beyond to experience amazing new films in the beautiful environment of San Francisco’s Bay Area. On September 10, 2013 the festival will be showing the Norwegian film Victoria.

In this sumptuous drama set against the unforgettable backdrop of Norwegian fjords and forests at the turn of the 20th century, a miller’s son, Johannes, and a landowner’s daughter, Victoria, are a pair of youthful star‐crossed lovers. Social standing is just one barrier to the couple’s bliss, but money poses an even bigger obstacle.

Growing up together in the verdant woods of Victoria’s family’s estate, the two fall in love while they are still children. As a young adult, Johannes finds renown as a poet and novelist but is still too poor to win Victoria’s hand. Instead, against her will, Victoria’s father arranges her engagement to a wealthy army officer (Bill Skarsgard).

In this handsome adaptation of Knut Hamsun’s acclaimed 1898 novel, writer‐director Torun Lian fashions a timeless romance that balances its emotional undercurrent with a fascinating observation of 19th‐century Norwegian social mores.
