The next annual parade to celebrate the 17th of May will be held on Sunday, May 19, 2013 starting at 1:30 p.m. Followed by a grandstand in Leif Erikson Park. The theme for this year's 61st, 17th of May Committee (Norwegian Day Parade Committee) is “Sharing Norwegian Traditions.” The word tradition, triggers a flood of images and ideas. One thinks of food (krumkaker), holiday celebrations (dancing around the Christmas tree) and special handiwork (Norwegian sweaters). Yes, these are all examples of Norwegian traditions.
The Vansa Brass Band and Lista Trekkspillklubb (The Lista Accordion Cluc) along with Hellvik Mannskor (a Men's Choir) will participate.
The parade steps off at 80th street and Third Avenue at 1:30 PM, rain or shine, and proceeds along Third Avenue, turns right at Bay Ridge Ave (69th street) up to Fifth Avenue, makes a left onto Fifth Avenue, marching along Fifth Avenue to 67 street, makes left along 67 street - marching along the park up to the reviewing stand between 6 and 7th avenue.
At 3:30 PM the grandstand will take place in Leif Erikson Park.
The guest speaker this year is Rune Edvardsen, from Kvinesdal Norway, a man who lives his faith through his dedication to social justice. He is the founder and CEO of Dina Foundation. (www.dinafoundation.com) Rune will be giving a glimpse into his life’s passion, which burns brightly through his actions; Actions of endless love and unceasing compassion to reach the unreached, mostly forgotten people groups around the world.
You will have the opportunity to hear him speak at the parade's ceremony on 67th Street between 6th and 7th Avenues around 2:30 and on Saturday, May 18th from 7:30 - 10:30 at The First Free Evangelical Church (66th Street Church) on Sixth Avenue and Sixty-Sixth Streets
