Norwegain Flora in Downtown DC

Last updated: 8/17/2012 // Pedestrians strolling along 19th Street south of Dupont Circle in Washington, D.C. might be surprised to catch a glimpse of native Norwegian plants, courtesy of a mural at popular lounge Science Club.

Science Club's owner, Steve Maguire, describes himself as a "big fan of street art." On a recent trip to Palestine, he was inspired by the works of the famous street artist Banksy, and decided to bring a similar ethos to the patio at the lounge.

He commissioned artist Lisa Markuson. His directive: paint me a Norwegian landscape — something "Norwegian, but science-y." Artist Lisa Markuson works on her mural at Science Club

Markuson, who had spent time previously in Sweden, came up with the idea of Norway's native plants. She did her research and, with the help of assistant Holly Bass, painted the folk-art mural in two days.

The pair included a puffin, a bird native to Norway, by special request.

According to Bass, the lettering was the most difficult part.
