Want to study in the United States? Scholarships for Norwegians announced for summer 2012

Last updated: 1/23/2012 // The Brittingham Viking Organization is announcing two scholarship opportunities for summer 2012: Wisconsin Alumni Association (WAA) Scholarship of USD 10 000 and The Apeland Viking Scholarship of USD 10 000. Application deadline: February 20, 2012.

Information about the scholarships

For over 50 years, the Brittingham Viking Organization (BVO) has provided Norwegian students with unique scholarships for studies at the highly regarded University of Wisconsin‐Madison, USA. The two scholarships of 2012 include the Wisconsin Alumni Association Scholarship for studies in any academic field, and the Apeland Viking Scholarship for studies in the field of communication. The two scholars will be allowed to take 6‐9 credits at the UW‐Madison during the summer semester of 2012.

Both scholarships include travel within the US, with a standing invitation to visit BVO alumni and their families throughout the country. The BVO is run on a volunteer basis by scholarship alumni, and the selected candidates are expected to get involved in various post‐scholarship activities.

Requirements to apply

  • You must be a Norwegian citizen between 21 and 27 years of age.

  • You must currently be enrolled at a Norwegian university or college.

  • You must have completed a Bachelor’s degree within your field by the time of departure.

  • You must be able to study and live in the USA between June and mid‐August.

Evalutation

The applicants will be evaluated both on an academic and personal level. In addition to having an excellent academic record, the ideal candidate has strong social skills, is outgoing and dynamic, with the ability to adapt easily to new situations. Involvement in extracurricular activities, leadership experience and organizational work will be advantageous.

The recipients of the scholarships can look forward to a unique summer at the University of Wisconsin‐Madison. The scholarships will primarily cover tuition, housing and some travel. Scholars should be prepared to cover additional expenses with personal funds.

It is possible to apply for both scholarships through the same application, but please note that the Apeland Viking Scholarship is intended for studies in the field of communication. For more information about university, please visit the University of Madison website.

What must be included in the application?

  • Your one page application/letter of motivation in English. Please specify which scholarship(s) you are applying for.
  • Your university transcript, including grades.
  • Your CV with photo.
  • Two letters of recommendation.
  • A receipt of the application fee.
  • An application fee of 150 NOK must be paid by February 20, 2012 to: The Brittingham Viking Organization v/ Jon Dugstad. Bank account no: 9710 34 64505. Please mark the payment: “BRITTINGHAM VIKING SCHOLARSHIP”.

All applicants will be notified of their status after the deadline. Interviews with the final candidates will be held in Oslo, Saturday March 3, 2012.
