‘I wish my kids had the same talent’ – Norway at SXSW

Last updated: 3/29/2010 // Norway had a solid showing at the SXSW (South by Southwest) festival in Austin, Texas, this year. With a total of fifteen bands in varied musical genres they raised the banner of Norwegian music high.

LidoLido, hip hopers from Haugesund in Norway, received high praise from the American rapper Bun B, from Underground Kingz.”I wish my kids had the same talent” the rapper told MSN News after LidoLido’s concert at Club 115.

The music scene in Norway is large and varied. The Norwegian artists and bands that held showcases at the SXSW were Bigbang, Casiokids, Cocktail Slippers, Deleted Waveform Gatherings, Eva & the Heartmaker, Julian Berntzen, LidoLido, Pirate Love, The Megaphonic Thrift, Unni Løvlid, Apoptygma Berzerk, Serena Maneesh, Sondre LerchePirate Love and William Hut. The bands play in a variety of genres, such as electronic, pop, psychedelic rock, new wave, hip hop, experimental and metal.

South by Southwest is an industry-based event and a great place for Norwegian bands to show off the sound of Norway’s diverse music scene. SXSW is also a useful place for Norwegian musicians to interact with the American music business and with bands from other international music scenes.

The Norwegian musicians at the festival received a lot of attention from the public at this year’s festival. Bloggers, journalists and other artists praised the bands from the north.

Many blogs, such as LimeWire Music Blog and Austin Bloggy Limits, both praised the band Casiokids from Bergen in Norway. Before the SXSW festival NeuFutur magazine recommended the Casiokids concert: “Casiokids generate the kind of unrestrained party mood that inevitably transforms any audience into a joyous, dancing mass.”
