Jazz in the Garden

Last updated: 8/23/2010 // Partnering with the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC, the Norwegian Embassy was happy to introduce two Norwegian jazz bands as part of the “Jazz in the Garden” series that takes place every Friday throughout the summer. Bjørn Solli Quartet played on Friday August 6th and Carsten Boe Trio performed on the following Friday, August 13th.

With the beautiful Sculpture Garden as a backdrop and perfect weather conditions, Bjørn Solli Quartet performed for an audience of 6000.  As onlookers picnicked on the lawns or sat cooling off their feet in the fountain, the Quartet performed Bjørn Solli’s original compositions as well as selected standards.  There was an abundance of swing and adventurous solos from everyone involved.  Some members of the audience even felt compelled to dance which created a great atmosphere.

The weather Gods were not as cooperative the following Friday when Carsten Boe Trio performed, but an enthusiastic audience showed up none the less.  The band was moved indoors to the Pavillion due to possible rain, but this did not decrease the ambience in the park.  Loudspeakers were put outside for all the people on the lawns to enjoy.  The Django Reinhardt inspired jazz set the tone for an afternoon filled with a whole range of sounds, from blue melancholic moods to flamboyant expressions.
