First Flowering: Rosemaling by Early Masters

Vesterheim Norwegian-American museum will this April exhibit traditional Norwegian Rosemaling. The exhibition includes masterpieces by the first generation of Norwegian rosemalers: Thomas Luraas, Hans Glitterburg, Torkjell Sausgardhaugen, Hebrand Sata and Knut Mevastaul. These painters were all active in the first half of the 19th century. Lesser-known, and even unknown artists with an apparent talent will also be on display. The Vesterheim museum holds the largest and the most comprehensive collection of Norwegian rosemaling in the United States.

"The First Flowering" exhibition will be presented in conjunction with the symposium "The Art of Rosemaling: Tradition meets the Creative Mind". The aim of the symposium is to discuss Norwegian rosemaling as an art form in the past, present and that continues to evolve in to the future. Prominent painters and writers Sigmund Aarseth, Nils Ellingsgard, Eldrid Arenzen, Jo Sonja Jansen and Karen Jenson will be holding classes before and after the symposium.
