Grieg Lecture with Erling Dahl

Well known Greig scholar Erling Dahl comes to New York to give a lecture on the celebrated composer on November 5 at the Goethe Institut. Special guest for the occation is Norwegian Minister of Culture, Trond Giske. Notice: Change in time: the event will begin at 6pm, not 7pm as earlier announced.

Dahl, who is the Head of Artistic Planning at the Bergen International Festival will lecture on the Piano Cnocerto in A Minor, which will be performed by the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra in Carnegie Hall the following day. The Piano Concerto in A Minor is the only concerto for piano Grieg ever completed, and is considered one of the most polurar piano concertos in the world.

He will also talk about the songs Grieg composed to the theatre adaptation of Henrik Ibsen's poem of 1867, Peer Gynt. Peer Gynt is perhaps Ibsen's most famous work in Norway, and its national romantic reflections and portrayal of Norway and Norwegian Culture made Edvard Grieg the natural composer for the task. Dahl will also give his reflections of Grieg today, his influence on contemporary music, and why his music is still listened to and performed.

Ambassador Liv Mørch Finborud, Consul General of Norway in New York and Per Brevig, Founder and President of the Edvard grieg Society will give welcoming remarks. Norwegian Minister of Culture will give introductory remarks. Edvard Grieg's Sonata for Cello and Piano, Op. 36 will be performed at the lecture, featuring Darrett Atkins on Cello and Ann Schein on piano.

In addition to Erling Dahl's talks, Special Advisor to Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, Lorenz Reitan will give a lecture entitled "Edvard Grieg and Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra." Grieg was Artistic Director of the orchestra from 1880 to 1882, and donated large parts of his estate to a fund dedicated to support the orchestra.

The lecture is presented by the Edvard Grieg Society in association with the Royal Norwegian Consulate General.
