In conjunction with the release of his new book, “A Billion People: An Eyewitness Report from the Frontlines of Humanity,” Jan Egeland embarks on a 13 date speaking tour from coast to coast in the U.S.
Egeland has been named one of the individuals who shape our world by TIME Magazine, and has, ever since he as a 15 year old organized a chapter of Amnesty International in Norway (he later chaired the national organization), been an outspoken and important member of the global community. Egeland was appointed Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs by then Secretary-General of the United Nations, Kofi Annan in 2003. His first order of business was to draw the attention of the world to the ongoing crisis in Darfur.
Egeland has kept on addressing injustices and global challenges in a style that hides little but often causes controversy. In 2004, in the aftermath of the Tsunami, Egeland is famously quoted with saying that “Christmastime should remind many Western countries how rich we have become, and if actually the foreign assistance of many countries now is 0.1 or 0.2 percent of their gross national income, I think that is stingy, really.”
Jan Egeland is currently director of the Norwegian Institute of International Relations and Special Envoy of the UN Secretary General for conflict resolution. He is the 2008 recipient of the Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt Freedom from Want Award. On March 4, his newest book, “A Billion People: An Eyewitness Report from the Frontlines of Humanity” will be released in the U.S.
