Some of the most exciting and talented folk music performers from around the world descend upon New York this January for the annual Association of Performing Arts Presenters conference. Among them are three Norwegian acts, Unni Løvlid, Karl Seglam and Fribo, who play the Northern Realms showcases at Scandinavia House, New York City, January 14th.
1/7/2008 :: The Association of Performing Arts Presenters (APAP) gather the greatest talent in folk music annually in New York City, for four days of music and seminars. This year, one of the APAP highlights is a night of showcases at Scandinavia House, featuring nine performers from Norway, Sweden, Finland, Belgium, Scotland, England and the U.S.
The three Norwegian artists are:
Karl Seglem
One of the most exciting contemporary performers and composers in Norway, tenor saxophone and goat horn player Karl Seglem has consistently extended musical frontiers with his original perspective and daring improvisational style. In combining Norway's rich folk music traditions with his own mode of expression, he creates a modern soundscape where improvisation and composition are given equal weight. Seglem's music ranges across the entire spectrum from folk to free form, and is inspired by everything from the world beat to the Nordic landscape.
Unni Løvlid
A top folk musician in Norway who was named “traditional musician of the year 2006,” Unni Løvlid is known for her work with “Rusk” and collaboration on contemporary music projects as well as in folk music.
Fribo
A unique collaboration between three musicians from Norway, Scotland, and England, Fribo has gained recognition and acclaim for blending their respective musical styles together with sensitivity and an exuberant feel for contemporary sounds and rhythms. Guitar, fiddle, hardanger fiddle, voice, and Norwegian willow flute are featured.
